Strike Alert: Australian National Longshoremens Strike Underway
The Maritime Union of Australia is organizing strikes at DP World facilities at Brisbane, Sydney and Freemantle container terminals for varying periods. Stevedores at DP World Australia are reportedly striking against automation, outsourcing, cuts to income protection insurance and changes to existing bargaining agreements.
Workers at Brisbane went on strike this morning (Tuesday the 9th) which represents the first in a series of 48- to 96- hour work stoppages planned by the MUA. Sydney and Fremantle unions are planning to strike Thursday 11th and Friday 12th. Melbourne, which handles over three million twenty-foot equivalent unit shipping containers, will be on strike from Wednesday 10th for up to 96 hours.
The Strike Club’s dedicated risk map will continue to be updated with information on the risk environment as it develops.
